What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is an additional layer of security for your website.

In the past they were only really required for websites which processed payments or personal data, but now web browsers such as Google Chrome are marking any website without an SSL certificate as “Not Secure”.

This can show as a grey message in the URL bar, but web browsers are now making their warning more prominent, with a full screen message stating that the site is not secure.

Naturally this would put most users off visiting the website, so we highly recommend that you get an SSL certificate if you plan to have a website on your domain.
