Put simply, you can’t. Don’t be put off however, in the same way you cannot do this, nor can any “specialist, expert or guru” in the field of SEM (Search Engine Marketing). So why bother reading this article? Well, there are a number of steps you can follow that will make your web site more attractive to Google and more importantly, to the visitors of your site.
Google uses a ranking “algorithm” to determine the positioning of websites when you look for a search term. The “algorithm” uses an undisclosed series of values and criteria to determine which website contains data most relevant to a users search.
So, for example, you are interested in ant farming. You type this expression into Google and hit “search”. Google will now sift through all the web pages it knows about (8 billion and counting) and examine each one:
-
does this page mention the term “ant farming”
-
does this page have pictures of “ant farming” (determined by “alt” text and file name)
-
does this page have links from other websites related to “ant farming”
-
how do those links describe the page (i.e. do they say “click here for ant farms” or in an irrelevant case “click here for car hire”)
-
there are many other less significant factors taken into consideration, and many more that are not (contrary to popular belief)!
silver rule:
if you are hoping to “make your website top of Google” for a popular term (commonly 2 words or less) then you will need lots and lots (and lots!) of links from other related websites
-
for less popular terms (5 words or more) then the content within your site might often be enough (page titles, text, alt text)
- for all of those search terms in between, you will need a mixture of the two
golden rule:
Design your website for your visitors, not the search engines. 2 hours spent chasing links, or trying to fit the word “Ant Farming” in for the 35th time, could have been spent developing content that your visitors will love and benefit from. If a visitor to your site loves your content they are more likely to;
-
follow your call to action (i.e. purchase, sign up, call us etc)
-
link to your website (which, remember, was our most important factor to “make your website top of Google” in the first place!)
