high numbers of female directors in Newbury

September 2012

Data from the Duport Business Confidence Report has shown that during the first half of the year, Newbury was well ahead of the UK as a whole in terms of numbers of female directors. During this period, 30.3% of director appointments were female, compared to a UK average of 23.4%.

Since 2003, half year statistics for female directors in Newbury have been far from constant. Numbers of women appointed as directors dipped sharply in 2006 and 2010, but since then have been rising.

When the UK Government's first national strategy for women's enterprise was published in 2003, it was estimated that women constituted around 27% of self-employed people in the UK, and that only 12% of businesses were majority-owned by women. By 2009, women made up 29% of the self-employed workers in the UK and 15% of UK business enterprises were majority-led by women.

Managing Director of Duport.co.uk, Peter Valaitis said:

"The recent economic conditions have been particularly hard on women, so it's no surprise that more women are taking the helm and forming their own companies. Such entrepreneurial spirit, from both men and women, is a good sign for the economy of Newbury."
