The closure of Chatham dockyard in 1984 had an adverse effect on the local economy, with around 7000 people losing their jobs. However, the dockyard has now been redeveloped into a major tourist attraction with historic buildings, museums, galleries, warships and a vibrant programme of events and activities.
The wider area is also undergoing regeneration with several schemes either already running or in the planning stages. These include the refurbishment of the High Street and a mixed-use scheme on The Waterfront at Medway Street.
Managing Director of Duport.co.uk, Peter Valaitis said:
"The high net company growth we are seeing in Chatham reflects the changes that are taking place in the town."
"Local businesses are starting to emerge from the economic gloom and many new companies are setting up, which should help strengthen the economic base."
