Dudley has seen more new company formations in the first half of 2012 than in any other half year on record for the town. Company formation dipped in the first half of 2009, but has been on the rise ever since, suggesting the local economy is recovering from the worst effects of the recession.
Dudley town centre was adversely affected by the opening of Merry Hill shopping centre just three miles away. The huge shopping centre was opened in 1985 and both shoppers and major chains have been migrating there ever since.
However, the town is now focussing on tourism as a way of attracting visitors, exploiting its many attractions, which include Dudley Castle and the Black Country Living Museum. This approach is proving successful - there were 4.3 million visitors to Dudley in 2008 who spent a total of £223 million, while tourism supported approximately 6131 jobs.
Managing Director of Duport.co.uk, Peter Valaitis said:
"The record number of new company formations during the first half of the year is fantastic news for the Dudley economy, and bodes well for the rest of the year."
"With so many unique attractions and a central location, it's no surprise that Dudley is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. The rise in company formations could well be linked to the tourist trade."
