Female directors and new companies on the rise in Southport

October 2012

During the first six months of the year, the number of female directors in Southport rose to 26%, compared to 24% during the same period in 2011.

Data in the Duport Business Confidence Report shows that since 2003 numbers of female directors, both in Southport and across the UK, have been falling. The recent rise in Southport could be attributed to the fact that the recession has hit women particularly hard and more are choosing to become directors of their own companies.

Not only are numbers of female directors rising in Southport, numbers of new company formations are hitting record heights. The first half of 2012 saw more new company registrations than any half year on history for the town. During this period there were 347 new companies formed, a marked improvement on last year's figure of 299.

Managing Director of Duport.co.uk, Peter Valaitis said:

"A rise in the number of female directors in Southport should inject a fresh perspective into the local business community, and the record number of company registrations seen this year shows that entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the area.

"Although Southport has experienced some economic difficulties during the recession, the statistics in our latest report imply the town is on the road to recovery."

The promising figures contained in the Duport report suggest that any damage done by the recession is unlikely to have long-term effects on the economy of Southport - which is good news for the many new companies choosing to set up there.
