Gravesend in Kent has set a new record for company formations in the first 6 months of 2012, according to research by formations experts Duport.co.uk.
414 new businesses were formed in Gravesend between January and June this year, setting a new record for the first 6 month of any year since records began. The previous record of 366 new businesses was set in the first 6 months of 2010.
Peter Valaitis, managing director of Duport.co.uk said: “This amazing news, the entrepreneurs of Gravesend are showing incredible resilience and optimism during the double-dip recession.”
This latest news comes on top of other positive stories about the Kent economy, with the unemployment rate falling in the county and fewer firms going into insolvency in June.
The other great news for Gravesend’s new entrepreneurs is that it is smaller companies leading the way with the fall in insolvency rates, as medium and large businesses actually experienced an increase in the number of companies going bust.
Managing Director of Experian Business Information Services, who released the data on insolvency, stated: “Although the overall figures for June show a fairly stable environment at the moment led by smaller firms, the higher insolvency rate at the top end of the business world will have an impact on the supply chain.
"When taking on new business, it is vital they start to monitor the health of both customers and suppliers. They can be forewarned of any issues and be in a better position to deal with the impact of another business’s failure.”
Gravesend’s new record for start-up companies shows that the town is flourishing with entrepreneurial activity, which could help bring new activity and growth for the local economy in Gravesend.
