Sole traders, entrepreneurs and other individuals who are required to fill out self-assessment tax returns will not receive a late filing penalty if they make their submission on the 1st or 2nd of February.
With the possibility of strikes by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), HMRC took the decision to give an extra two days’ grace to people filing self-assessment tax returns, in case there were delays or difficulties in getting through to call centres and inquiry offices.
“We've always been very clear that we want the returns – not the penalties,” stated Stephen Banyard, from HMRC.
“For that reason, we don't want anyone who can't get through for help and advice on January 31 to be disadvantaged in any way.”
The small business community has responded with relief that this measure has been taken, so entrepreneurs will not be unfairly fined due to circumstances outside their control.
Any self-assessment tax returns filed on the 1st or 2nd of February 2012 will be treated as though they were filed before the deadline of 31st January.
