schools must develop entrepreneurs

january 2012

The Forum for Private Business (FPB) has called for schools to play a leading role in encouraging entrepreneurship amongst young people.

In the FPB’s submission to the All-Party Small Business Group’s entrepreneurship inquiry, it put forward a number of suggestions as to how this could be achieved, including more provision for work experience, changes to the curriculum, and better links between schools and local businesses.

"Schools are vitally important because they are essentially where young minds are honed and appetites for working life whetted," stated Jane Bennett, Head of Campaigns for the FPB.

"They have a vital role to play in encouraging entrepreneurial spirit – we recognise that and so do our members – which is why we are calling for a greater focus by government on making sure schools are given the tools for the job."

Other issues raised by the FPB in their submission to the entrepreneurship inquiry included tax relief to boost lending to SMEs, and a widening of the NI relief currently available to firms taking on new employees.
