Britain’s 5 biggest banks have missed Project Merlin’s 2011 lending targets for small firms by over £1billion.
Project Merlin was created to push banks to lend, with particular attention to providing finance to small and medium sized businesses across the UK.
Under Project Merlin, £76bn should have been available for SMEs, but only £74.9bn was actually lent to small companies during 2011.
In a survey of 11,000 of its members, The Federation of Small Businesses has found that fewer companies are accessing finance either in the form of an overdraft or a loan.
John Walker, National Chairman of the FSB stated, "Our research in the last two years shows that around a third of businesses are refused credit and this could be reflected in the fact that newer businesses are using more of their own money to fund their business rather than turn to the banks for help."
In their research the FSB found that more people were using their own funds, or borrowing from family and friends than attempting to access finance through their bank.
