budget 2011: enterprise and entrepreneurship encouraged

march 2011

An extension to the Enterprise Investment Scheme and increased tax relief for entrepreneurs have been announced in the 2011 budget, as well as a commitment to new Enterprise Zones across the UK.

Chancellor Osborne's budget includes measures designed to reward entrepreneurs and encourage new enterprises. These measures include an extension of the Enterprise Investment Scheme, with the tax relief available increased from 20% to 30%.

Business owners will also benefit from the doubling of entrepreneurs' relief, giving them a reduced tax rate of £10% of the first £10million of lifetime capital gains.

The Chancellor also announced that 21 new Enterprise Zones were to be set up across the UK, helping bring business to areas where there is a need for more jobs and investment.

“The new enterprise zones could provide positive incentives for local authorities to promote development, allowing the Government to carry out a real-time experiment on what actually works as a spur to economic activity,” stated John Cridland, Director-General of the CBI.

In these zones, companies will benefit from reduced business rates. New Enterprise Zones are planned for areas including Birmingham, the Black Country, Manchester, London and Tyne and Wear.
