budget 2011: reducing red tape

march 2011

Chancellor George Osborne has announced that £350 million of red tape is to be reduced in the 2011 budget.

Small companies will also benefit from a 3 year exemption from any new regulations implemented.

Many small to medium sized enterprises struggle with the cost of regulation, which takes up valuable time as well as money. The move has been welcomed by small business groups, although there have been calls from some that the reductions should have gone further.

Under the new initiatives, businesses with 10 employees or fewer will be exempt from new regulations for three years, and £350 million of existing legislation is to be abolished.

“The moratorium on new legislation will be welcomed by smaller firms. The Government should think small first when it comes to making employment law - if it works for the smallest firms, then it works for businesses of all sizes,” stated John Cridland, Director-General of the CBI.
