maternity leave overhaul

january 2011

In April parental leave is to be changed to permit fathers to use any remaining unpaid leave if their partners decide to go back to work early.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg also announced that a system of shared parental leave will be introduced in 2015, which is expected to allow parents to share parental leave in any way they see fit.

The current system of maternity leave and paternity leave pushes many mothers into being the stay-at-home parent, regardless of what the family prefers, because maternity leave is available for a much longer period.

Many people also consider that the current system makes employers – particularly in small businesses – reluctant to take on women who are seemingly likely to become mothers, because of the impact maternity leave can have on a company.
