£11 billion rise in red tape

may 2010

The cost of regulation to UK businesses has risen by £11 billion to a total of £88.3 billion, according to research by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

The 40 new regulations added since last year include 21 which produce a recurring benefit to companies, but this still leaves the annual cost at over £1 billion.

The BCC’s Burdens Barometer is calculated by experts from Manchester and London Business Schools, and estimates the cumulative cost of complying with all new regulations implemented since 1998.

“The Burdens Barometer highlights a clear problem for UK business. The cost of dealing and complying with new laws and regulations over the last 12 years has been far too high,” Stated David Frost, the BCC’s Director General.

“During this critical time for the economy, we need businesses to be driving recovery and creating jobs. But, the government must play its part by putting the brakes on the relentless flow of red tape.”

The Burdens Barometer report also shows that since 2004, 30% of regulations have originated in the EU.
