interest rates on hold despite inflation fears

may 2010

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee has kept interest rates at 0.5% for another month, despite fears over rising inflation.

In April, the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose to 3.7%, a 17 month high, forcing governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, to write to the new Chancellor, George Osborne, with an explanation.

The Retail Prices Index (which includes house prices and is generally used to calculate changes in pay and pensions) rose even further, hitting 5.3%, the highest level for 19 years.

“If the recovery continues as expected, that will gradually erode the slack in the economy, bringing inflation back to target,” states Mervyn King in his letter to the Chancellor.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated that the increases have been due to rising food and fuel costs, as well as higher duties on alcohol and tobacco.
