budget 2010: CGT to change for entrepreneurs

march 2010

The Entrepreneurs’ Relief threshold for Capital Gains Tax (CGT) has been extended to charge only 10% on gains of up to £2 million, as announced in the Budget this week.

The move is hoped to encourage entrepreneurs and sole traders, providing a good incentive for people to start up their own company.

It was expected by many that this budget would include measures to increase CGT, especially considering the 50% rate of income tax coming into force in April.

There are concerns that an extension to the 10% Entrepreneurs’ Relief will encourage business owners to use the lower rate of Capital Gains Tax to avoid the higher rate of income tax.

Other issues covered in this Budget include:
• Business rates relief
• No changes to National Insurance Contributions plan
• Planned increase of the National Minimum Wage
• £94 billion set aside for business loans
