budget 2010: no change of plan for NICs or corporation tax

march 2010

National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and corporation tax for small firms are both still set to rise by 1% from April 2011, despite pressure from small business groups for the idea to be abandoned.

Whilst Alistair Darling’s budget included some welcomed moves for small business, his decision to keep the proposed rise in NICs has not been greeted with the same enthusiasm.

"It was hugely disappointing to hear that the increase in National Insurance contributions will still go ahead, considering the bureaucratic burden small businesses face in administering its threshold," stated Phil Orford, Chief Executive of the Forum of Private Business (FPB).

Other issues covered in this Budget include:
• Extension to Capital Gains Tax relief
• Business rates relief
• Planned increase of the National Minimum Wage
• £94 billion set aside for business loans
