budget 2010: rates relief for small business

345,000 SMEs will not have to pay business rates due to the cut announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling in what is likely to be his last budget before the general election.

The business rate cut will last one year from October 2010, and is expected to help half a million companies.

Small firms occupying buildings with a rateable value of £6,000 or less will not have to pay business rates at all for a year and rates will be reduced for companies in properties with a rateable value of up to £12,000.

Other issues covered in this Budget include:
• Extension to Capital Gains Tax relief
• No changes to National Insurance Contributions plan
• Planned increase of the National Minimum Wage
• £94 billion set aside for business loans
