economically inactive mask true jobless figures

march 2010

Unemployment has fallen to 7.8% during the three months to January, but the number of people in work fell by 54,000 during the quarter according to official statistics.

The “economically inactive” includes people on long term sick leave, students, stay-at-home parents and people who have ceased looking for employment.

"These figures are only part of the story, we would rather these figures go down rather than up," stated Work and Pensions spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, Steve Webb.

"But the number of [economically inactive] people who have just given up, that is a real concern."

The current hostile employment market seems to be pushing people towards education and full-time parenthood which takes them out of the unemployment figures without them actually undertaking any work.

It is also considered likely that many of those who have found employment are “underemployed” or taking on part-time work because they cannot find a suitable position.
