emergency budget 2010: NI threshold to rise for employers

june 2010

Chancellor George Osborne has announced in the Emergency Budget that the threshold for employers to pay National Insurance will rise by £21 per week above the indexed rate.

The previous government’s intention to raise National Insurance contributions was dubbed a “tax on jobs” by the Conservative party in the run-up to the general election.

This move is hoped to make it easier for companies to employ workers during difficult economic times.

Other measures announced by the Chancellor include:

VAT to rise to 20%
Rise in NI threshold
Corporation tax cut for SMEs
Entrepreneurs’ relief increased
CGT increased by 10% - but not for basic rate taxpayers
