£25 billion more in quantitive easing

november 2009

The Bank of England is extending its quantitive easing (QE) programme and putting £25 billion more into the UK’s economy.

QE involves the Bank of England printing money which is used to buy up assets from companies and financial institutions.

“The current measures, though helpful, will have to be supplemented with additional steps, and QE will have to be increased further," stated David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

“It is important for the MPC and the Government to act decisively in order to unblock obstacles to bank lending. One critical factor delaying Britain’s exit from recession is the difficulty smaller firms face obtaining adequate finance.”

£175 billion has already been spent in the programme, although the further £25 billion will be spent at a slower rate over a period of 3 months.
