tsar Alan Sugar

june 2009

Entrepreneur and reality TV celebrity, Sir Alan Sugar has been named as the new enterprise tsar in the cabinet reshuffle.

"What needs to be sorted out is the economic climate, small businesses and other enterprises," stated Sir Alan, whose role will be to advise and assist Prime Minister Gordon Brown with issues affecting entrepreneurs and the small business community.

It is widely reported that he will also receive a nomination for peerage, and a seat in the House of Lords.

The announcement has been met with mixed responses. Some see the appointment as a cynical attempt for the government to make the most Sugar’s media success and high profile from the reality show The Apprentice. Others consider the move to be positive, considering his personal experiences of entrepreneurship and his rise from selling beetroot from a stall to becoming a multi-millionaire through Amstrad, the company he formed in 1968 at the age of 21.

Sir Alan has been a long-time supporter and friend of Gordon Brown, and has backed the Prime Minister to stay in his job: "We need to get the economy moving again and, as far as I'm concerned, you couldn't have a better person to do that because of his background as a chancellor."
