1 in 4 small businesses untouched by recession

july 2009

1 in 4 SMEs have felt no noticeable impact from the recession, and 35% have only felt a negligible impact, according to research by Intuit.

Most small business owners have put their success down to individual management and initiatives, and only 23% had found it easy to access help from outside their own company.

"With over 35% of the UK economy reliant on the more than 4.7 million small businesses operating in the UK, their success is as vital as any of the large publically quoted businesses," stated Intuit's Managing Director of Global Small Businesses, Pernille Bruun-Jensen.

"While our research shows that it has not been easy for small businesses it highlights that many have not rested on their laurels in the absence of tangible Government support."

Managing costs was the most common form of action, taken by 45% of respondents, as managers try to reduce outgoings and overheads.

The introduction of new products was an initiative adopted by 30% of companies surveyed, and many small business owners attempted to manage their cash flow by renegotiating terms with suppliers – at a reported success rate of 74%.

However, 1 in 20 SMEs reported that they had been hit so severely by the recession that they were struggling to keep afloat.
