government urged to fund SME internships

july 2009

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is calling for the government to create 5,000 internships in SMEs to help combat youth unemployment.

"Graduate unemployment is set to soar to unprecedented levels this year as businesses struggle to make ends meet and cut back on recruiting university leavers", stated Colin Stratton, FSB regional chairman.

"The Government must invest in linking up small businesses and graduates now to prevent graduate unemployment spiralling any further."

With larger companies restricting their graduate recruitment schemes and a rising number of under-25s out of work, the FSB is suggesting that the government provide funding and advice to smaller firms to enable them to take interns.

Awareness of internship schemes is very low amongst SMEs, although the majority of apprenticeships are offered by small businesses.

According to the FSB’s research, 20% of small companies would look to offer a graduate internship, but 50% were unaware of internship schemes or how to go about offering them.
