The highest recorded increase in unemployment took place between March and May this year rising by 281,000, according to the government’s official statistics.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released figures that show the number of jobless people rising to 2.38 million.
There have been sharp increases in the number of young people (under 25) who are out of work, and in the long-term unemployed (those out of work for more than a year).
"With a new generation of school and college leavers soon starting to look for work, our unemployment crisis will get even bigger," stated Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the TUC.
726,000 people under 25 were found to be unemployed at the end of May, the highest number in 16 years. It is also expected that this number will increase further over the summer, when students graduate and leave school or college to enter the workplace.
528,000 people are "long-term" unemployed, meaning that they have been jobless for over a year. This includes 133,000 people under 25. There are serious concerns about the impact of long-term unemployment on younger workers, as reports show that a sustained period of joblessness at a young age can damage employment prospects for the future.
1.56 million are now claiming unemployment benefit, which is a smaller than anticipated rise of 23,800.
