The Forum for Private Business (FPB) has calculated that small businesses spend £2.4 billion every year complying with employment regulations.
In the FPB's quarterly Referendum survey, employment law was found to be the most costly and difficult area of red tape for most SMEs to deal with, ahead of health and safety (£2.1 billion) and tax (£1.8 billion) legislation.
£391 million was spent on managing and controlling absences, £333 million on disciplinary action, £259 on redundancy and dismissal and £237 on maternity entitlement.
The FPB's research also showed that small business owners spent an average of 10 hours each month on complying with employment law.
