| One in seven female entrepreneurs started their business for the opportunity to work flexibly and a better work-life balance, according to a survey commissioned by the Minister for Women and Equality, Harriet Harman.
Nearly 90% of women involved in the survey stated that they would happily set their business up again, showing that self-employment has been a positive experience for the vast majority of female entrepreneurs.
Two thirds of respondents to the survey found that their confidence had increased since entering into self-employment, and 80% felt that they had greater independence.
Harriet Harman wishes to encourage more women to see the opportunities available to them in setting up their own business.
"Women want to call the shots by running their own business. They’re recognising being their own boss gives them control and allows them to balance their work and family life," she stated.
"Men are almost twice as likely as women to start a new business," she said. "That’s why we are determined to close this gap by providing solid support and encouragement."
Women now represent 27% of the self-employed population, which is an increase of 17% since 2000.
