The deadline for filing returns is the 31st of January, but people wishing to use this service need to register on the website at least 7 days before the deadline. This is to allow HMRC to send you a PIN number through the post, which is used for security.

According to HMRC, the online service allows people to calculate their taxes automatically, receive an acknowledgement of receipt immediately, receive repayments faster (if they are owed) and also enable them to view their statements online and receive payment reminders through email or text.
