| Only 13% of politicians have spent more than 5 years in business, highlighting concern amongst business groups that the government does not understand the issues affecting small firms.
The research, undertaken by the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) and the research agency ComRes also revealed that only 9% of politicians have spent 10 years or more in business.
"Our members are sceptical that politicians don't care about anything other than clinging onto power. This research will only further the belief that their elected representatives lack the knowledge required to make a positive difference for businesses, which is all the more critical in the current economic climate,” stated Phil Orford, chief executive of the Forum of Private Businesses (FPB).
The FPB has called for the government to improve their understanding of the small business community and the issues they face in the current economic climate.
