| The government has announced plans to create another 90,000 apprenticeships for young people, with small business groups calling for SMEs to be placed at the forefront of these proposals.
The Forum for Private Businesses (FPB) has welcomed the initiative, and asked that the government recognise the role that smaller businesses can play in facilitating the increase.
"Smaller businesses must be placed at the centre of plans to create a further 90,000 apprenticeships for young people by 2013."
"In the FPB's latest Referendum survey from October 2007, 62% of respondents said they wanted to see 'employability' placed at the heart of further education," stated Matthew Goodman, policy representative for the FPB.
The draft Apprenticeship Bill, announced in the Queen’s speech earlier this week set out plans to create 90,000 more apprenticeships by the year 2020, with 500,000 available in total by 2013.
