Many SMEs are paying more on their energy bills because of difficulties in finding a suitable supplier and contract, according to an investigation by the Observer.
The lack of transparency in the system makes it complicated for small businesses to find the best supplier as there is no requirement for energy companies to publish their rates.
SMEs also often do not have the resources or the time to properly scrutinize their energy bills, and as a result are more vulnerable to inefficient billing and aggressive sales pitches.
Poor communication has also been cited as a problem, with some companies claiming that they have been mis-sold contracts or that they have not been updated on problems or changes to their contract.
The FSB and energywatch are campaigning for changes to help small businesses, and have set up www.smallbusinessenergy.org.uk which has information and advice about your energy charges, including how to deal with sales calls and how to change your supplier.
