document FPB warns against 'incompetent' utility companies back
april 2007

Utilities companies have come under fire after a company discovered it owed thousands of pounds because of poor customer record keeping, according to a business organisation.

As a result, the Forum of Private Business (FPB) has urged its members to read their meters and check bills carefully because utility companies cannot be trusted to check for accuracy.

An FPB member found it owed Scottish Power £16,000 because the company had not amended estimated readings.

Smaller businesses in particular are at risk, said the FPB's Senior Member Services Representative, Philip Moody.

"It is irresponsible to allow such practices to continue. They may not miss a black hole in their accounts of several thousand pounds, but to a smaller business that is a lot of money," he said.

Scottish Power supplies electricity and gas to more than five million homes and businesses in the UK.

A spokesperson for independent energy consultancy Utility Options advised that businesses monitor their meter readings on a quarterly, if not monthly, basis.
