choosing your company's name
Deciding on a name for your company is an important choice, here are some things to take into consideration when picking your company's name.
things to know
• all company names must be unique
• if you find that the name you want is taken, there are lots of ways to alter it. For example, if Company X Ltd was taken, you may want to try Company X UK Ltd instead
• a good way to differentiate your name is geographically i.e. Random Services UK Ltd/Random Services Watford Ltd
• there are certain words that cannot be used or can only be used in certain circumstances. Look at our sensitive company names section for more information
• other companies are permitted to object to your name if they feel that yours is too similar to their own, but only if you’ve been using that name for under a year
• all limited company names will be suffixed with Ltd (i.e. Duport Associates Ltd)
• your company name doesn’t officially identify your company, your company number does. This means that you can change your company name if you wish – however all the same restrictions apply whether you are registering a new company name or changing your original name
• if you do not want to register a limited (Ltd) company, you can protect your company name by using our reserve a name service
